Quick Summary
  • Mastercard has launched Stablecoin Security, which screens stablecoin payments for fraud and sanctions risk before they settle
  • Stablecoin Security launches in North America first, with Borderless.xyz and Keyrails as launch partners
  • Mastercard expects worldwide availability in 2027 and plans to extend the tool through BVNK

Mastercard has launched a tool that checks stablecoin payments for fraud and sanctions risk before the money moves.

The product, called Stablecoin Security, was unveiled on Monday at the Money20/20 conference in Las Vegas.

What it does

Stablecoin Security screens payments in dollar-pegged stablecoins for fraud, scams and exposure to sanctioned parties before they settle on a blockchain.

It combines Mastercard’s own payment intelligence with blockchain analytics. The tool looks at signals such as where the funds came from, whether they touch restricted parties and whether there are signs of a scam.

It then produces a risk score before the payment settles. That score can feed into the compliance and fraud checks that banks and payment firms already run.

The product is delivered through an API that works across platforms. It builds on Mastercard’s existing Crypto Credential and Crypto Secure tools.

Who is using it

The launch partners are Borderless.xyz and Keyrails, both graduates of Mastercard’s Start Path blockchain accelerator.

Stablecoin Security launches first in North America, with availability worldwide expected in 2027.

Why Mastercard says it is needed

Mastercard pointed to a study by the Bank for International Settlements of 593 million stablecoin transfers in 2025. It found nearly 60% were complex transactions with several steps, rather than simple payments from one party to another.

“Stablecoins are creating new possibilities for value exchange,” said Ann Johnson, Mastercard’s executive vice president of security solutions. She added that “financial institutions need the right intelligence and controls to participate with confidence.”

Part of a bigger push

The launch follows Mastercard’s Global Money Platform, built with BVNK, the stablecoin infrastructure firm it completed buying in August. That platform lets businesses hold fiat and stablecoins in one account.

Mastercard plans to extend Stablecoin Security’s reach in 2027, including through BVNK.

What happens next

Mastercard had not named which stablecoins or blockchains the tool covers at the time of writing. The next milestones are wider adoption beyond the two launch partners and the global rollout planned for 2027.

⚖️ Our Verdict 📈 Bullish Signal

Mastercard has brought its fraud tools to stablecoin payments, giving banks a familiar risk check before money moves on-chain. But it has only two launch partners so far, covers North America only, and had not named the supported stablecoins or chains at the time of writing.
