The Ethereum Foundation has suffered another leadership blow, with co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang announcing her resignation effective immediately in a post on X, deepening a wave of high-profile departures from the organisation.
Second Co-Executive Director to Exit
Wang said she reached the decision after a recent sabbatical that gave her time to reflect on her priorities and future plans. “I’ve come to feel that this is the right moment for me to step back,” she wrote, adding that “Ethereum has always been bigger than any one role, any one organization, or any one moment.”
Her departure is the second at the co-executive director level in a short span. Fellow co-executive director Tomasz Stanczak announced earlier this year that he would leave the role after helping steer a leadership transition at the Switzerland-based nonprofit, which supports development of the Ethereum ecosystem. During Wang’s sabbatical, Ethereum Foundation board member Bastian Aue helped oversee the transition and has taken on a larger interim role following both directors’ exits.
Part of a Wider Pattern of Departures
Wang’s resignation is not an isolated incident. At least eight senior figures have departed the Foundation over the past five months, fuelling community scrutiny of the organisation’s priorities, governance, and strategic direction as Ethereum faces mounting competition from rival blockchains.
The Ethereum Foundation plays a central coordinating role in the development and stewardship of the Ethereum network, so leadership continuity there is closely watched by developers, investors, and protocol contributors worldwide. No permanent replacement for either co-executive director has been detailed at the time of publication.
