Quick Summary

South Korean financial conglomerate Mirae Asset has unveiled an ambitious plan to build a 150 trillion won ($109 billion) digital asset business centred on Digital X, the crypto exchange formerly known as Korbit, according to a report by The Korea Times.

What Digital X Will Target

Digital X will focus on four core verticals: cryptocurrency trading, stablecoins, real-world assets, and security token offerings. The platform also intends to tokenize physical commodities, with gold, silver, and electricity cited as specific targets.

Background: Korbit Acquisition and Rebrand

The roadmap follows Mirae Asset Consulting’s acquisition of a 97.15% stake in Korbit in July for a cumulative 141.4 billion won. The exchange was subsequently rebranded as Digital X, making Mirae Asset the first affiliate of a South Korean financial group to take control of a domestic crypto exchange.

Korbit itself has deep roots in the South Korean market. Founded in 2013, it was the country’s first cryptocurrency exchange. Despite that history, the platform held only a 0.5% share of South Korea’s cryptocurrency trading market in 2025, according to the country’s Fair Trade Commission.

That figure is the measure of what Mirae Asset is proposing. The target is a 150 trillion won business built on a platform that currently captures half a percent of its home market, and no date has been attached to it.

Chairman Outlines ‘Mirae Asset 3.0’ Vision

Mirae Asset founder and chairman Park Hyeon-joo addressed Digital X employees at an event in Seoul on Wednesday, framing the exchange as central to the group’s next strategic phase. ‘Our initial goal is to make Digital X a core pillar of Mirae Asset 3.0,’ Park said, according to The Korea Times.

Zero-Fee Push to Capture Market Share

Digital X has already moved aggressively on pricing. Starting Monday, the exchange began waiving trading fees across all won-denominated assets. The zero-fee policy is scheduled to run through August 24, 2027, a move that signals an intent to rapidly close the gap on larger domestic rivals.

⚖️ Our Verdict ⚖️ Watch and Wait

A major financial group taking control of a domestic exchange is a real structural change in the Korean market, and two years of zero fees is a serious commitment to buying share. But $109 billion is a target rather than money committed, no date is attached to it, and the platform it rests on captured half a percent of its home market last year.
