Virtu Financial, M1X Global and Tradeweb have completed an onchain repo transaction using a sovereign digital bond as collateral, with the full cycle settling on the Canton Network in under 10 minutes, according to an announcement from the firms involved.
What Is USDM1?
The collateral at the centre of the deal is USDM1, a US dollar-denominated sovereign bond issued onchain by the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The instrument is backed 1:1 by short-term US Treasurys, pays a coupon while pledged as collateral, and is structured under New York law as a fully collateralized sovereign obligation.
USDM1 is available for trading on electronic platform Tradeweb, with institutional custody handled by Anchorage Digital, BitGo and tZERO.
A First for Sovereign Onchain Collateral
The companies involved described the transaction as the first repo to combine natively issued sovereign collateral with fully onchain atomic settlement. The deal was executed between regulated counterparties on Tradeweb, and the complete repo and repurchase cycle closed in fewer than 10 minutes.
The significance of the transaction is that it deploys tokenized sovereign debt as working collateral inside an institutional financing structure, rather than treating it purely as an issuance or trading asset. The parties noted the deal remains an early-stage example, and broader adoption across institutional repo markets is not yet established.
One number is missing. Neither the announcement nor any of the participants has disclosed the size of the repo, which in a financing transaction is usually the first detail stated. Without it, the deal reads as a demonstration of the plumbing rather than evidence of a market.
Canton Network Sees Surge in Institutional Activity
Canton is a blockchain network built specifically for institutional finance, offering privacy controls and permissioning features suited to regulated transactions and tokenized assets.
The repo announced Thursday follows a July transaction in which Tradeweb facilitated the real-time transfer of a tokenized US Treasury from Franklin Templeton to Virtu Financial on Canton, with that deal settling against USDCx.
Activity has accelerated since. In August, FalconX and Interstice launched a cross-chain swap engine connecting Canton with Ethereum, Solana and Robinhood Chain, and World Liberty Financial launched its USD1 stablecoin natively on the network. Digital Asset and the American Idea Foundation, founded by former US House Speaker Paul Ryan, also announced a 2027 pilot that would use Canton to distribute state-administered benefits across three US states.
