Quick Summary
  • Bridge Building is now one of 42 MiCA-authorised EMT issuers in the EU after receiving Luxembourg regulatory approval for both CASP and EMI status.
  • Three German cooperative banks joined the MiCA register as CASPs, bringing the total number of authorised crypto service providers in the EU to 324.
  • No changes were recorded to asset-referenced token authorisations or the list of non-compliant crypto asset firms in the latest ESMA update.

Bridge Building, the Luxembourg-registered entity behind Stripe-owned stablecoin infrastructure firm Bridge, has been added to the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) register following regulatory approval from Luxembourg authorities.

Bridge becomes 42nd authorised EMT issuer

The addition raises the total number of MiCA-authorised electronic money token (EMT) issuers in the EU register to 42, according to the latest update published Wednesday by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA).

The listing follows Bridge’s announcement on 2 July that it had secured both a Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) authorisation under MiCA and an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) licence from Luxembourg’s Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier. Bridge’s Head of Product, Mai Leduc Blount, said the approvals allow businesses in the EU to build stablecoin and payment products under a regulated framework.

Three German banks added as CASPs

The same ESMA update brought three new CASP entries from Germany:

  • Volksbank Die Gestalterbank
  • VBU Volksbank im Unterland
  • VR-Bank Erding

Their inclusion pushes the total number of authorised CASPs in the EU register to 324.

No changes to ART authorisations or non-compliant listings

Wednesday’s update showed no movement on asset-referenced token (ART) authorisations, with no ART issuers currently listed. The register of non-compliant crypto asset companies was also unchanged.

ESMA has increased the frequency of its MiCA register updates in recent weeks, with multiple revisions published across July.

⚖️ Our Verdict ⚖️ Watch and Wait

Stripe's stablecoin arm being authorised in the EU is a real credential, and a sign the bloc's framework is being taken up by mainstream payments companies rather than only crypto-native ones. But this particular item is a register entry rather than a launch, the licences behind it were granted five weeks ago, and Bridge is the 42nd issuer on that list rather than the first, so nothing about the EU stablecoin market changed on Wednesday.
