Coinbase is pushing deeper into AI-powered finance, announcing that Coinbase Business users can now accept USDC payments from autonomous AI agents using the x402 payment standard, alongside a new suite of AI trading tools and a developer software development kit.
What Coinbase Launched
According to a post on X dated July 23, 2026, Coinbase Business accounts will be able to receive USDC from AI agents through x402, a payment protocol the company first introduced in May 2025. The standard enables stablecoin transfers over HTTP, targeting AI agents, applications, and APIs as the primary use cases.
The announcement also covered two additional products aimed at the same market:
- AI trading tools that allow users to monitor orders, access live market data, and execute actions triggered by predefined conditions.
- A software development kit designed for developers building applications powered by autonomous agents.
The ‘Agentic Economy’ Argument
Coinbase framed the product suite around what it calls the ‘agentic economy,’ a model in which AI agents make payments, manage finances, and carry out tasks on behalf of human users without direct intervention at each step.
The company cited a notable internal data point to support the urgency of the build: for the first time last month, AI agent-generated traffic overtook human traffic on Coinbase’s Base network documentation pages. Despite that shift, Coinbase argued that the internet’s financial infrastructure was built around ‘one assumption: a human clicking the button,’ leaving businesses, developers, and users without purpose-built tools for machine-initiated transactions.
Broader Industry Context
The rollout arrives as stablecoins and blockchain payment rails attract growing attention from exchanges and payment companies looking to serve autonomous AI systems. Other players including exchange OKX and payment firms such as Crossmint have similarly moved to position their platforms for the autonomous agent economy.
Why x402 Matters
The x402 standard, introduced by Coinbase in May 2025, is specifically engineered for machine-to-machine payments at the HTTP layer, allowing an AI agent to pay for a service or API call in USDC without requiring human sign-off on each transaction. By extending this standard to Coinbase Business accounts, the exchange is effectively creating a two-sided market: AI agent operators on one side, and merchants and service providers accepting USDC on the other.
Together, the USDC payment acceptance feature, AI trading tools, and developer SDK represent Coinbase’s most direct move yet to build dedicated financial infrastructure for the autonomous AI layer of the economy.
