Quick Summary
  • Ledger has unveiled Atom, an Android touchscreen device it calls a signer, at its Op3n conference in Paris
  • Atom signs transactions in Ledger OS, which Ledger says is physically isolated from Android, and ships with Solana Mobile apps
  • Ledger has opened Atom reservations but had not announced a price, shipping date or regional availability at the time of writing

Ledger is moving beyond the hardware wallet. At its Op3n conference in Paris on Thursday, the company showed Atom, a phone-sized Android device built around its own Secure Element, with Solana Mobile’s app store preinstalled.

Ledger calls Atom a signer rather than a wallet. Reservations are open, but Ledger had not given a price or shipping date at the time of writing.

What Atom is

Atom combines the Android Open Source Project with a Ledger Secure Element running Ledger OS.

It can sign crypto transactions like Ledger’s existing wallets, and it supports encrypted messaging between Atom users. It also runs third-party Android apps.

The hardware includes a 6.77-inch OLED display, a rear camera, a 4,000mAh battery, a Qualcomm Dragonwing chip and a data-only eSIM.

How Ledger says it keeps signing separate

Sensitive actions, such as signing transactions and approving requests from AI agents, take place in what Ledger calls Secure Mode, which runs on Ledger OS.

According to Ledger, the display and touch controls used in Secure Mode are physically isolated from Android.

The device also has a hardware privacy switch that cuts power to the camera and microphone. Ledger says anti-tamper and tamper-evident features run from the packaging to the device itself, including ways to detect whether the enclosure has been opened.

The Solana deal

Solana Mobile has named Ledger its first hardware expansion partner.

Atom will ship with the Seeker app and the Solana dApp Store, which lists more than 1,500 apps, preinstalled on the home screen.

“Having the Seeker app on Ledger Atom from day one just makes sense, so Ledger users get access to the Solana ecosystem,” said Ian Rogers, Ledger’s chief human agency officer.

Solana Mobile says it has sold more than 200,000 devices across its Seeker and earlier Saga phones. It says Seeker has handled more than $13 billion in transaction volume across 154 million transactions.

Solana Mobile began opening its software stack to other Android manufacturers in March.

A launch during a security investigation

The launch comes as Ledger investigates tampered devices in its reseller network.

Ledger’s Donjon security team found an implant in a device sold through CryptoBilis, a Southeast Asian reseller. The implant captured recovery phrases during setup and sent them out over a mobile connection. The tampering has been linked to a suspected $87 million wallet drain.

On Tuesday, Ledger asked resellers in six Southeast Asian countries and Hong Kong to pull its devices from shelves.

Atom will be sold only through Ledger’s official website.

What happens next

The open questions are price, shipping date and regional availability, none of which had been announced at the time of writing.

A more complex device also means a larger attack surface than a single-purpose wallet. That puts the weight on independent security reviews of how well Ledger OS is actually kept apart from Android.

⚖️ Our Verdict ⚖️ Watch and Wait

Atom gives Ledger a broader device with Solana distribution built in. But there is no price or ship date, the isolation claims are Ledger's own and untested, and the launch comes during a live investigation into tampered Ledger devices.
